History took flight at Athens–Ben Epps Airport on Saturday, October 24, as CAF Airbase Georgia brought its rescheduled Athens Rides Day to the community. Originally planned for May 23, the event gave participants an opportunity to experience aviation history aboard vintage military aircraft.
Rides aboard both the P-51 Mustang and the LT-6 Mosquito sold out, demonstrating strong interest in these living history flight experiences. Each flight offered a personal connection to the aircraft and the people whose service they help commemorate.
Athens provided a fitting setting for the event. During World War II, Athens–Ben Epps Airport supported aviation training associated with the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School at the University of Georgia. Airbase Georgia’s visit connected that local heritage with its continuing mission to educate, inspire and honor.
Thank you to everyone who purchased a ride, our hosts at Athens–Ben Epps Airport, and the volunteer pilots, maintenance teams and ground crews who made the day possible. Your support helps Airbase Georgia preserve these historic aircraft and keep their stories flying for future generations.
